The term femme originated in communities of lesbian women (at a time when lesbian referred non-exclusively to all women-loving-women, including a group of people we know today as bisexual women). This referred to lesbian who often presented as female and took on a stereotypically feminine role. Femmes are often assumed to be sexually attracted to butches and/or masculine women, although this is not always the case. It should be noted that due to the community it originated from, many lesbians consider the use of the word femme by anyone other than a lesbian to be appropriative. For this reason, many people who identify with this gender identity choose the spelling of "fem" instead.
