An umbrella term is a word or phrase that covers a broad interval or set of identities that are seen as having something in common. For example, Queer is an umbrella term for the LGBTQIAAP+ community.

Other umbrella terms include Transgender, and Non-binary.

Umbrella terms must be used with caution since it may be that some people who are intended to be referred to when using an umbrella term do not identify with the term or even reject being placed under the umbrella. Similar to how a gender cannot be forced on someone without their consent, an umbrella term cannot be either.
